Nothing you type leaves your browser. Limits are LinkedIn's published maximums and LinkedIn does change them, so leave a small margin on anything critical.

Now find people worth writing to

A short note works because it references something specific. Extract post commenters, event attendees, group members and job-change signals, then write to the signal.

Every LinkedIn character limit in one table

FieldLimitWhat actually matters
Connection request note300Aim for 250 to 280. Names and company names are longer than you expect.
Post3,000Only the first ~140 characters show on mobile before see more.
Headline220Search results and comment threads show far less than 220.
About section2,600Truncated after roughly the first three lines until someone expands it.
InMail subject200Inbox previews cut it far earlier. Front-load the specific detail.
InMail body1,900Length is rarely the constraint. Relevance is.
Comment1,250Long comments read as self-promotion. Two or three sentences perform better.
Direct message8,000Effectively unlimited. Under 60 words is still the better target.

LinkedIn adjusts these periodically and rolls changes out gradually, so a limit can differ by account for a while. If a field is close to its maximum, cut it rather than trusting the boundary exactly.

The only limit that changes outcomes

Of the eight numbers above, one does real work: the 300-character connection request note. It is the single piece of text that decides whether a stranger accepts you, and it is read in a crowded list next to your headline and photo.

The useful structure inside 300 characters is short. One line naming the specific thing you saw, one line saying why you are reaching out, and no ask. That fits in about 200 characters and leaves room for a long name. Anything you add past that is usually explaining your product to someone who has not yet agreed to hear about it.

The second number worth respecting is the ~140-character cut on a post. Everything after it exists only for people who already decided to expand. If your first sentence is a preamble, the post is competing with its own opening.

Questions

How many characters can a LinkedIn connection request note be?

300 characters, including spaces and line breaks. The safest working target is 250 to 280, which leaves room if a name or company is longer than you planned for.

Where does LinkedIn cut a post with see more?

Roughly 140 characters on mobile and around 210 on desktop, though LinkedIn adjusts this and line breaks change it. Treat the first 140 characters as the only text most people will read before deciding whether to expand.

Does the counter include spaces and emoji?

Spaces and line breaks are counted, because LinkedIn counts them. Emoji are counted the way a browser counts them, which can differ slightly from LinkedIn's own count for some combined emoji, so leave a margin if your text is emoji heavy.

Is anything I type stored?

No. The counting runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored and no account is required.

Do shorter connection notes actually work better?

In practice a short note referencing a specific, recent signal outperforms a long note explaining your product. Relevance is doing the work, not length, which is why sourcing the right people matters more than the copy.
